Eyeliner

Every single eyeliner is unique and takes into consideration your personal style, your makeup routine, your morphology, eye shape, eye color and skin tone. As a makeup artist since 2004, I am very well versed in all of this. Plus, eyes have always been my favorite part of makeup! Your new permanent eyeliner will require 2 sessions, 3-6 months apart to complete and then you will need a color boost every 2-5 years to maintain the color and shape.

Lashline enhancement

The lash enhancement is the perfect technique for anyone who wants the most natural and “invisible” cosmetic tattoo. In this technique, we are filling in the space in between the lashes and creating subtle structure to the eyes. It is ideal for anyone wanting to make their lashes appear thicker and fuller as well as for those who feel like they have “no eyes” or lack a pop without eyeliner or mascara.

Velvet liner

This style is more structured, like a lightly smudged eyeliner pencil. Can be done in a shade ranging from black to dark brown. There are no harsh edges and offers the structure of the eyeliner with a little more softness.

Shadow liner

The shadow liner is the most versatile of all the techniques. There are usually 2 or 3 different tones used in a shadow liner ranging from black to medium brown. The lashline and small wing are the darkest and most pigmented areas, we work upwards onto the lid to create a soft gradient that blends to the lighter tones then into the skin. This style offers soft, blended and structured results.

Classic liner

This will be the most structured and defined eyeliner style. It’s ideal for those who love the liquid eyeliner look with a nice crisp wing.

How to Prepare

Before your appointment: Please tell Joelle about any medication or supplements you are taking. These may affect the outcome of your procedure. Look over after care instructions carefully and ensure that you can arrange your schedule accordingly. If you have previous permanent makeup of the eyes, please send a clear, close up and well-lit picture of it. Please note that you will be more sensitive 5 days before, during and 5 days after your menstrual cycle. Please cancel your appointment if you have had an eye injury, a stye, eye issues, or if you are suffering from conjunctivitis or have had it in the last 6 weeks before your appointment.

  • 3 months before: Do not use lash growth serums for 3 months before your appointment.

  • 1 month before: No fillers in and around the eye area. Do not get any chemical peels, laser or IPL treatments or use retinol, AHAs or hydrocortisone in and around the eye area.

  • 2 weeks before: Do not take fish oil, Omegas or Vitamin E. NO unprotected exposure to UV rays or tanning beds, no Botox on the forehead or around the eyes. If you have eyelash extensions, make sure your lashes have been removed for at least 2 weeks before your appointment.

  • 1 week before: Avoid taking Vitamin D, Niacin (vitamin B3). Do not get a lash lift.

  • 48 hours before: NO alcohol. NO Ibuprophen or aspirin (unless medically necessary) as they thin the blood. Extra strength Tylenol can be taken if needed.

  • 24 hours before: Do not wear any eye makeup.

  • Day of treatment: NO coffee or caffeine. Avoid exercising the day of the treatment and please make sure to eat something before coming in for your appointment. Do not wear any eye makeup. If you wear contact lenses, please wear glasses to the appointment and for 7-10 days after the treatment.

What to Expect During the Appointment

Prior to your appointment, you will have filled out your intake form and your medical history, as well as your consent form. This will allow me the opportunity to make sure there are no health issues, medications, supplements or treatments that can prevent us from doing the eyeliner tattoo.

We will start our appointment with a consultation, where we will discuss your wants and needs and answer any questions you may still have. We will then take our before pictures and apply the numbing cream. Once the skin has numbed, I will do the eyeliner design and show you. This step is very important and is the one that will allow us to agree on the shape/style that I will tattoo. Once you agree to the shape, I will begin the tattoo. Your eyes will remain closed during the entire tattoo process and numbing is used throughout to keep you comfortable. It is very important to stay relaxed during the procedure, squinting and squeezing the eyes during the treatment will make it impossible to preform the service. Once the tattoo is done, I will take your after pictures. We will then go over the aftercare instructions and send you home with your aftercare products.

You can expect to be slightly swollen right after the treatment. The swelling usually shows up more the next morning.

What to Expect During the Healing Period

Most women feel like the healing process is a lot easier than they had originally expected (Although I wouldn’t recommend doing them right before an important event!). Generally the day of the treatment, the eyes will have a little bit of swelling. The next 2 days, the eyes will be swollen upon waking up. The swelling generally goes down within a couple of hours, ice can be applied to help with the swelling and making sure to blink a lot will help reduce the swelling as well. Then around day 5-7, the scabs start to flake off. Usually, around day 7-10, the scabs have fully come off and the eyeliner appears lighter in color. This is completely normal, it will take another good 4-6 weeks for that new skin to become more transparent again. During this period, you may find the eyeliner doesn't look fully even in color or saturation. Once we see each other at the touch up appointment, any unevenness or shift in tone can be adjusted. The touch up is a very important part of the permanent makeup process.

Aftercare

Immediately: DO NOT TOUCH your tattoo, this is an open wound, and an infection could occur. The area may have some redness and swelling.

Day 1-2 : On the night of the treatment and the next morning, wash your hands and use the antiseptic wipes provided to clean the treated area. Your eyelids may have some swelling for 48 hours (usually only in the mornings). Apply ice morning and night and as needed until swelling is completely gone (put ice in a plastic bag and wrap the bag in a CLEAN paper towel, do not apply ice directly to skin). You may take some anti-inflammatory to help with the swelling. Avoid alcohol, it could cause more swelling.

Until all scabs have fallen off on their own (8-10 days): Do not wet the area or wear contact lenses. Avoid all sources of heat (sauna, steam room, bath, etc.), bathing in seawater, swimming pools or hot tubs as well as any physical activity that may result in sweating. Do not use any cosmetics (mascara, eyeshadow) or skin care products on the treated area. After 5-7 days, if the eyes feel tight or itchy, a little bit of the after-care cream provided can be applied to relieve any dryness or flaking.

For 3 weeks: Do not get eyelash extensions.

For 1 month: Do not expose the area to UV rays (you may wear sunglasses to protect the eyeliner), avoid Botox, fillers, facials, lasers, peels, AHA’s and retinols in the area around the eyes.

For 8 weeks: Do not use lash growth serum until 8 weeks after the touch up.

Never: Pick, scratch, or scrub the small scabs. Allow them to fall off by themselves. If you are itchy, add a thin layer of the aftercare ointment.

  • The eyes are closed at all times during the tattoo process. I will have my fingers holding your eyelid and manipulating it for the tattooing process, making sure the eye is never open.
