Eyebrows

Eyebrows are certainly not a one size fits all shape, and regardless of trends, we have to design an eyebrow that is as close to your natural shape as possible (to ensure most natural healed results) and right for your face. This means that your features and personal style will help to determine the shape, size, color and intensity of the tattoo. Your new eyebrows will require 2 sessions, 3 to 6 months apart to complete, then you will need a color boost every 2-4 years to maintain the color and shape.

“I have chosen to offer only machine ombre and powder brows because I find it to be the most natural and sustainable solution long term for the eyebrows. With this technique, it will appear like a soft eyebrow powder was applied to the eyebrows This will offer a lower pigment load and will age better in the skin. We obviously want it to look good right away, but it is more important to look at the long-term results. “

  • Most people know the term microblading, but very few know the difference between microblading and permanent makeup. I often hear that microblading is the most natural and that it is not a tattoo... This is misinformation. In both cases, we are implanting pigment into the skin, they are both tattoos. The difference between the two is how the pigment is inserted into the skin.

With microblading, we use a hand held tool that has a series of needles on it (which creates a blade) to cut the skin and deposit pigment in it in the shape of hairs. The majority of people are not good candidates for this technique and when preformed on the the wrong type of skin, the results can be very unnatural. Microblading can only be repeated a number of times before causing blurring of the lines, scarring of the skin and oversaturated pigmentation. Besides the fact that it is impossible to keep cutting exactly into the same hairstroke every time you need a color boost. This treatment tends to be more uncomfortable and the healing is more difficult.

With permanent makeup we use a machine and needles to pierce the skin and deposit pigment in it, this is a much healthier way to get the pigment in and acts similarly to the effects of microneedling. This technique is much more comfortable during the procedure and heals more easily. It is, in my opinion, the one that compromises the skin the least, is more sustainable, longer lasting in between touch ups, and looks best long term. To me skin health is most important, and this is why I only offer machine techniques.

How to Prepare

Before your appointment: Please tell Joelle about any medication or supplements you are taking. These may affect the outcome of your treatment. Look over after care instructions carefully and ensure that you can arrange your schedule accordingly. If you have previous permanent makeup or microblading in the area to be treated, please send a clear, close up and well-lit picture of it. Please note that you will be more sensitive 5 days before, during and 5 days after your menstrual cycle.

  • 4 weeks before: Do not get any chemical peels, laser or IPL treatments or use retinol, AHAs or hydrocortisone anywhere near the eyebrows.

  • 2 weeks before: Do not take fish oil, Omegas or Vitamin E. NO unprotected exposure to UV rays or tanning beds, no Botox on the forehead or around the eyes.

  • 1 week before: Avoid taking Vitamin D, Niacin (vitamin B3). Do not pluck or wax the eyebrows.

  • 48 hours before: NO alcohol. NO Ibuprophen or aspirin (unless medically necessary) as they thin the blood. Extra strength Tylenol can be taken if needed.

  • Day of treatment: NO coffee or caffeine. Avoid exercising the day of the treatment and please make sure to eat something before coming in for your appointment.

What to Expect During Appointment

Prior to your appointment, you will have filled out your intake form and your medical history, as well as your consent form. This will allow me the opportunity to make sure there are no health issues, medications, supplements or treatments that can prevent us from doing the eyebrow tattoo.

We will start our appointment with a consultation, where we will discuss your wants and needs, and answer any questions you may still have. We will then take our before pictures and then I will map/draw your eyebrows. This step is very important, and is the one that will allow us to agree on the shape/style that I will tattoo. Once you agree to the shape, we will discuss color and saturation. Only once you have agreed to all of this, I will begin the tattoo. I will be using topical numbing throughout the treatment to ensure comfort.

Once the tattoo is complete, I will take your after pictures. We will then go over the aftercare instructions and send you home with your aftercare products. You can expect your eyebrows to look a little thicker due to light swelling, more defined, darker and warmer than what they will look like healed.

What to Expect During Healing Period

Many women feel like the healing process is a lot easier than they had originally expected. Yes, the eyebrow will look a little bold and then a little patchy, but its no reason to hide away! (Although I wouldn’t recommend doing them right before an important event!)!

However, some women get brow shock. They go through a roller coaster of emotions when they have their eyebrows done. It takes a full 6 weeks to see what your tattoo will really look like. The eyebrow tattoo goes through a lot of changes, the color shifts, fades and softens during the healing period, before seeing the true healed color. The PMU can not be judged or adjusted before the tattoo is truly healed. This is a process and you have to be patient and trust it.

Generally, the day of the treatment, the eyebrows will look daker, more defined, bolder and warmer in tone than what they will look like once they are fully healed. The next day, and for the next few days, the eyebrows will appear very dark and will look a little harsh because the skin has now formed a thin layer of scabbing to protect itself. Then around day 5, the thin scabs will start to flake off making the eyebrows appear a little patchy. Usually, around day 7-10, the scabs have fully come off and the eyebrows appear light in color and almost like a milky version of the color. This is completely normal, it will take another good 4 weeks for that new skin to become more transparent again. During this period, you may find the eyebrows don’t look fully even in color or saturation. Once we see each other at the touch up appointment, any unevenness or shift in tone can be adjusted. The touch up is a very important part of the permanent makeup process.

Aftercare

Immediately: Do not touch your eyebrows. This is a fresh wound, it needs to stay clean to avoid infection. The area may have some redness and swelling.

Day 1: For the first hour after treatment, blot the brows every 15 mins with a clean tissue. Then every hour, with freshly washed hands, dampen one of the gauze provided with cool water (ring it out), and gently clean the eyebrows. Immediately pat dry with a tissue. Sleep on a clean pillowcase and avoid sleeping on your face.

Day 1-7 (or until all scabbing has fallen off on its own): Every morning and night, with clean hands, wash the eyebrow area gently with the cleanser provided. Pat dry with a tissue. Then, apply a VERY THIN layer of the ointment provided. Avoid wetting the eyebrows as much as possible other than to clean them as indicated. If they get wet accidentally, pat dry with tissue immediately. Do not use any cosmetics or skin care products on the treated area. No plucking or waxing the area. Avoid all sources of heat (sauna, steam room, bath, etc.), bathing in seawater or swimming pools or hot tubs as well as any physical activity that may result in excessive sweating.

For 1 month: Do not expose the area to UV rays (you may wear sunscreen on them after 7 days), avoid Botox, fillers, facials, lasers, peels, AHA’s and retinols.

Never: Pick, scratch, or scrub the small scabs. Allow them to fall off by themselves. If you are itchy, add a thin layer of the aftercare ointment.

  • In pmu, the goal is the beautiful HEALED results, not what it looks like immediately after the treatment. In all pmu areas, the tattoo will always be very vibrant, saturated (darker) and defined when it is freshly done. Once the skin has healed (6-10 days depending on the area), the tattoo will be lighter, less vibrant and have softer edges. It takes at least 6 weeks to see the true healed result where the pigment is stable in the skin.

  • Absolutely not! We work with the hair you have to determine the most natural looking shape for you. Once the shape is drawn on and agreed upon, I will tweeze the stray hairs that would be outside the tattooed area.
